| Panorama Judging Criteria |
Judging panorama competitions is never an easy task, but with the help of a set of established criteria, those persons judging competitions can more or less be judging the same thing at least from on the same page. We now take a close look at the break down of criteria points for panorama and invites all arm chair panorama judges to arm themselves with the tools for a more effective analysis of this years competition and results.
There are four general areas for the awarding of points in panorama. These four areas are:
(1) Arrangement
(2) General Performance
(3) Tone
(4) Rhythm.
There are specific sub-areas for these general areas where a further break down of points are made.
(1) Arrangement - 40 points
A total of forty (40) points are available to the band. Bands may gain/lose points over four sub-areas under Arrangement
| Introduction: 8 points |
The composition, by the arranger, of an appropriate introduction for the calypso chosen as the prepared piece. Within the context of this opening passage by the band, points may be gained by having a count that is clear, demanding attention and at the right tempo. Execution by the players should be flawless showing good balance and perfect intonation. |
| Re-Harmonization: 12 points |
The ability of the arranger to re-harmonize the calypso chosen as the prepared piece. After the calypso has been played in its original form (harmonically) the re-harmonization could be limited to one specific section or could be applied to the remainder of the arrangement. |
| Melodic Development: 8 points |
The ability of the arranger to embellish/solo on, and utilize rhythmic variations of the melody in the arrangement. |
| Motivic Development: 8 points |
The ability of the arranger to take a melodic motif(s) of the calypso and effectively utilize it (them) during the arrangement. Some arrangers may chose a particular line, a phrase or sometimes just a single note and develop on it in as many ways they wish. |
(2) General Performance - 40 points
Another Forty (40) points are available for general performance of the orchestra. Again, these are broken down into another four sub-areas.
| Interpretation: 12 points |
Ability to creatively execute arrangement and all nuances. Leads should be clear and embellishments supportive. |
| Dynamics: 10 points |
The effective execution of crescendos, de-crescendos, contrasts, phrasing, and other musical expressions in the arrangement. Dynamics is broken down into two further sub areas |

Colour: 5 points |
Instrumentation should be varied to achieve continued interest |

Texture: 5 points |
Use of melodic/harmonic strategies to complement expressiveness and style. |
| Creativity: 10 points |
The artistry and skill with which the arranger modifies the melody and by extension the artistry and skill with which the players execute this |
| Balance: 8 points |
Distribution of parts of arrangements to all sections of the orchestra. All aspects of the arrangement must be audible throughout the performance. |

It is in this area that the level of preparation by the steel orchestra will pay off in points. How cleanly they can navigate the more difficult passages and the runs, the confidence and body language with which they execute their pieces, the fun they experience while playing - its all going to help rack up the points. |
(3) Tone - 10 points
There are another ten (10) points for Tone. There are two sub-areas under tone.
Blending of Pans - Consistency
5 points |
blending is the overall tone/colour of the pans, including the consistency of tuning within the steelband. Blending is the term used in pan circles for what most people would consider as "tuning up" the band. |
Rich quality of sound
5 points |
While 5 of these points are dependent on the pan Tuner (the consistency in the blending of the instruments), the type of sticks and quality of the rubber used, plus the general technique of the players will impact on the rich quality of sound for which a further five points are available. |
(4) Rhythm 10 points
These final 10 points are for the Application of Rhythm Section:
the ability of the arranger to effectively utilize the engine room, drum set, congas, iron-beaters, and applicable percussion instruments - during the performance. Also, the ability of the entire steelband to maintain a consistent and steady rhythmic flow throughout the performance. This falls into three sub-areas.
