Draw for Panorama Appearance Position

Thursday, Aug 10th -- The draw for the 2006 Panorama competition took place today and the eight bands who will be participating in this year's competition now know in what position they will appear come August 12th, 2006.

Appearing first will be Capbank South City Plaza Pan Lovers from Grand Anse Valley, they will be followed by Grenlec Rainbow City All Stars from Grenville, Cable & Wireless Commancheros from St. Pauls and Republic Bank Angel Harps, at home, in Tanteen.

Leading off the second half of the eight-band competition will be Courts New Dimension from St. George's followed by Corinthians from Corinth St. David's, Florida All Stars from Florida, St. John's. Appearing in the eighth and final position will be newcomers to panorama, Grand Roy Pan Angels from Grand Roy, St. Johns.

If there was a band that could have cursed the luck of the draw, that would be Grand Roy Pan Angels. Playing in their first panorama finals, this youthful band, formed just earlier this year could well have a nervous wait to go on stage in position 8. Certainly, most people going into their first panorama would probably want to get on stage as soon as possible and just get done and over with it. It could be a pretty nerve wracking experience - waiting on your turn to play. Butterflies and the like.

The Pan Angels though, are a young and courageous group and even though they are unsponsored, have made great efforts and accomplished long strides since their formation. This year they made their first panorama appearance in Junior Panorama with energy and enthusiasm and it's a sure bet that come Saturday night, when they get the green light, regardless of what time it is or who played before them, they will be there to show what they're made of. They may not finish in the top three but they're sure going to impress a lot more people.

The other set of Angels in this year's panorama come from just a stone's throw away from the Carnival City Stage where they will be trying to remain unbeaten in panoramas held at the Tanteen Ground. Having won the previous three panoramas held at Tanteen in 1998, 1999, and last year in 2005, the Republic Bank Angel Harps will make their fourth panorama appearance at Tanteen as the favourite for many. The thought of someone coming and taking away their championship right in their front yard may be all the incentive the Harps need to take this year's title. With a James Clarkson arrangement of "Symphony on Steel" the Republic Bank Angel Harps are certainly a force to be reckoned with this year.

For Angel Harps though, it may not be all that smooth sailing. Definitely, it wont be if it's up to the Courts New Dimension led by David Peck Edwards. They have shown that they can match the Harps with winning championships consistently - something that has ensured the dominance of these two bands over the last fifteen years. Playing a David Edwards arrangement of "Pan in me Blood", New Dimension will be coming to the party with a point to prove.

It could well be a toss up as to who finishes outside the top two. Cable & Wireless Commancheros and Capbank South City Plaza Pan Lovers who will both play Smokey's "Pan is Alive" have been consistent performers in the past. For Commancheros though, this will be the first time that their new arranger, Andre Greenidge will be taking them to the finals. This will be also the case for Grenlec Rainbow City All Stars who will be under the guidance of a new arranger to the finals in Othniel St. Clair. They will be playing Randy Isaac's "Spirit of Pan". Between them they have a total of two championships - Cheros in 1994 and Rainbow City in 2000.

Together with Florida All Stars, another consistent performer, these three bands are expected to provide a serious challenge to the top two. Afterall, there have been upsets in the past. But the form books suggest that homeboys, Republic Bank Angel Harps is the band to beat this year.
