Caripan Panorama

Pan Village shortened but Caribbean Panorama is ON

The first ever Caribbean Panorama Championship will now be held in Grenada from the 29 November to the 1st December 2001, says Chairman of the  Marketing & Promotions Committee, Alvin Clouden.   The championship which was originally carded to start on Sunday 25 November, 2001 as been moved to a new date. This is primarily to facilitate participants who were having a difficulty with time off from work.

The main objectives of Caripan, the Caribbean Steelpan Association, are the promotion of culture as a means of sustainable development of the region and to bring people together through music. The Panorama Championship here will be the first major activity undertaken by the two year old CARIPAN.

Ten (10) bands one (1) from Barbados, one (1) from Antigua, two (2) from Trinidad, one (1) from Guyana, one (1) from St. Lucia and three (3) bands from host country Grenada are participating in the championships.  Current Panorama champions the GRENLEC Rainbow City All Stars, NCB Angel Harps and GBC New Dimensions will represent host country Grenada.

The events will be held at the Tanteen Recreational Ground, the official Pan Village and at the Grenada National Stadium, Track & Field. The Pan Village will open on Thursday 29 November with the Charity Jam. And on Friday 30 November there will be final practice session as the bands make their final preparations.

On the big night Saturday December 1st, the Caripan action moves to the Athletic Stadium where the bands will compete for the panorama championship and the “Bomb” title.  The five (5) judges for the competition are Junior Howell and Lorna Conyette of Trinidad and Tobago, Gregory Piper of St. Lucia, Vincent Stewart of St. Vincent and Joycelyn Williams of Antigua.

Organisers are going all out to ensure that this first championship is a success.  The events will receive regional and international coverage including WLIB Radio from New York. A sound engineer with years of experience in Trinidad has been engaged to ensure that the audience; local, regional and international get a top quality audio.

The Corporate community has also pledged their support in a number of ways.  Grenada Bottling Company, is the official supplier of soft drinks, Carib is the official beer, Guinness is the official stout and Cable & Wireless the official supplier of telecommunications.  Many more sponsors are expected to finalise arrangements this week about their involvement. Ticket will go on sale this weekend at the Caripan Secretariat, Drill Yard at a cost of $25 for grounds and $40 for the covered stands.
