Minor Categories
The Grenada Steelpan Music Festival Minor Categories Championships are a series of Steel Pan competitions that consist of the following categories:
- Soloist. An un-accompanied performance on any Steelpan.
- Duet. Two pannists rendering a piece together.
- Quartet. Four persons rendering a piece together on Steelpans or Steelpans and drums.
- Ensemble. Fifteen persons rendering a piece together on Steelpans & Percussion.
The Competition
- The competitions (Solo, Duet, Quartet and Ensembles) will run from the 15th to 23rd November 2008.
- The venue will be the Grenada Trade Centre in Grand Anse.
- A panel of three qualified musicians will adjudicate the competitions. The judging criteria will be the same as the current WSF criteria.
- There will be a Preliminary, Semi-final and Final Stages of the competition. These stages may vary based on the number of participants entered for each competition. Competitors will advance to the semi-final (where applicable) and finals based on the scores received for their performances. (See Rules & Regulations for scoring details).
Objectives
- To create an alternative avenue of musical expression for Pannists and Steel Orchestras in Grenada.
- To serve as a qualifying method for representatives from Grenada to take part in the equivalent competitions of the World Steelband Festival (WSF).
- To offer Pannists an opportunity to further study the instrument while being rewarded and recognized.
- Improving the quality of performance of the other units of the Steelband outside of the “Panorama Band”.
Our Vision
To become the single biggest Steelpan event outside of Grenada Panorama and to meaningfully represent Grenada at the World Steelband Festival
